Interested in writing for us? You’ve come to the right place! delve is a platform that is committed to expressing a multiplicity of views and voices that is reflective of the diverse cultural fabric of our communities.

We are primarily an arts and culture platform that focuses heavily on addressing cultural topics from a critical perspective, mainly geared towards a younger audience. We publish a range of content including:

  • Artist Features / Interviews
  • Exhibition Reviews
  • Essays
  • Editorials & Columns

We publish three times a year, and each issue has its own submission period and corresponding call for pitches, which often will centre around a particular theme or topic. Having your submission conform to this will increase your chances of being published. We usually post these calls in advance on our social media and website.

If you wish to submit something for consideration, please send your pitch to delve@uoguelph.ca, with the subject line containing the name of your pitch, and the type of article it falls under. You may also DM us on social media if you prefer. Submissions for the Summer issue are accepted on a rolling basis, while our Fall and Winter print issues are generally time-limited to a 60-day period at the beginning of each school semester.

If you intend to write for us in a more formal and sustained capacity, you may also apply to join our writing staff.

Below are some guidelines for submissions.

Guidelines for Artists

While we are primarily a magazine that focuses on the discussion of visual culture from a critical standpoint, we do from time-to-time accept submissions from artists . It is recommended however that art and literature submissions are are framed in a way that contextualizes your work to critical discourse within contemporary culture. This means accompanying your work with an artist statement that situates your practice with issues and topics of note.

If you are an emerging artist who would like to be interviewed about their work, please feel free to submit a pitch with a brief statement describing your practice and the ideas it explores, and we will try and reach back to you as soon as possible. Please note however that due to the volume of submissions we receive, we will not accept submissions that are purely on the basis of promotion.

Guidelines for Writers

We like to publish work that is unique, original, and thought-provoking! Submissions should be drawn from a number of sources including your own personal experiences and thoughts, alongside any additional research you may choose to use. Academic and formal writing should try to adhere to the Chicago Manual of Style, and the Canadian Press Style Guide. As we are a visual publication, please include images with your written work.

While we do accept essays written as assignments, our preference is to encourage people to think about visual culture outside the constraints of the classroom. In the interests of accessibility, we encourage you to structure your work in a way that is fluid and pushes the boundaries of a traditional academic paper. We want to hear your voice in the work you submit!

As part of our ongoing commitment to address racial inequities and injustices within arts and culture, our editorial mandate aims to highlight under-represented and untold narratives within contemporary practices. We strongly encourage work about or by those who identify from marginalized groups and communities. We prioritize work that is emancipatory, community-based and anti-oppressive at heart.

We will also provide resources for those who wish to improve their writing both in an academic and non-academic context. Stay tuned for more information!

We thank all for their interest, but only those whose submissions have been selected for publication will be contacted.
